Sept. 15, 2019 – A leading cannabis attorney in Arizona, Gary Smith recently presented to the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association (AZVMA) on cannabis use and regulation in the U.S., explaining how the right legislation could allow veterinarians to include cannabis-derived medicine, including CBD, in animals’ treatment plans.

Gary discussed the history of cannabis, little-known psychoactive compounds found in the animal kingdom, and the current state of the legal landscape. Further, he explained what the future could hold for veterinarians who are considering incorporating cannabis into their practices. While it is not legal for Arizona veterinarians to prescribe cannabis to animals, Gary shared key considerations for any future legislation that may allow veterinarians to incorporate cannabis-derived medicines into their practices, including possibly creating a special patient-class for pets under existing medical marijuana laws.

A seasoned litigator, advisor, mediator, and arbitrator, Gary is at the forefront of cannabis law in Arizona, helping to educate fellow lawyers and the public about evolving legal issues. A founder of the Arizona Cannabis Bar Association, Gary is regularly called upon by legal organizations, professional associations, and the media to share his expertise on ethics, agreements, litigation, and other key issues spurred by cannabis legislation and research.
